The Sixteenth District encompasses the counties of Culpeper, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William, Rappahannock, and Stafford. Posts include Ashburn, Culpeper, Haymarket, Leesburg, Lovettsville, Manassas, Manassas Park, Middleburg, Purcellville, Quantico , Remington, Stafford, Sterling, Warrenton, and Woodbridge. The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic Veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow servicemembers and veterans. It has a worldwide membership of 2.8 million. The Department of Virginia is comprised of 212 posts divided into 17 Districts with over 33,500 members. The Sixteenth District is the second largest District in Virginia with over 4000 members. The American Legion is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization with great political influence perpetuated by its grass-roots involvement in the legislation process from local districts to Capitol Hill. Legionnaires’ sense of obligation to community, state and nation drives an honest advocacy for veterans. The Legion stands behind the issues most important to the nation’s veterans community, backed by resolutions passed by volunteer leadership. American Legion members provided over 4 million volunteer hours last year nationwide, provided almost $8 million dollars for Community Service/Emergency Aid/Troop Support, provided over $15 million dollars for Youth Programs (Baseball, Boys State, Oratorical Conte sts, Scholarships, Scouting, and Shooting Sports), and helped with the donation of over 70,000 pints of blood. The success of the Sixteenth District depends entirely on active membership, participation and volunteerism. We are always looking for eligible members to help us continue to build on our legacy, especially the newest generation of Veterans who can help us grow our programs and community involvement.
